From Medicine to Creativity
I was privileged to have originally trained and worked as a doctor. However, as time went on, I realised that I needed to escape from being ‘that person in the white coat’. I found myself longing to explore my creative side and decided to leave medicine behind. This led me to begin a new chapter in my life as a TV programme maker at the BBC.
Discovering the Importance of Management
Towards the end of my time making programmes, I worked on projects that focused on stress within the police force and the motivation of a (then) first division football team. Through these experiences, I came to appreciate the critical importance of how people are managed in the workplace. Rather than simply reporting on these issues, I wanted to learn how to manage people myself. Once again, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to make a significant career shift—this time into management.
Embracing Change and New Directions
As a manager, I observed that some individuals were particularly resistant to the constant flow of change that is an inevitable feature of corporate life. In order to better understand and support people through change, I chose to study counselling psychology, followed by coaching. This led me to work as an internal coach and supervisor. However, when faced with yet another organisational restructuring, I decided it was time for another change in direction. I became my own boss and established myself as an independent coach and supervisor.
Drawing on a Rich Legacy
Reflecting on my journey, I recognise that my coaching practice has been shaped by the rich legacy of my diverse learning and professional experiences. My background as a doctor, programme maker, and manager has enabled me to create the unique synthesis of skills and perspectives which I offer to my clients.
I'm profoundly grateful to so many people who have believed in me and supported me on my journey.
